vettiver looks like a dried root. It is sold on streetsides and in 'naattu marunthu kadai'.I have seen people keep this between the clothes. I think it gave some fragrance and keep clothes out of bugs. And I heard that they also soak this in water and use that for bathing. Probably if you ask your 'paati' she would have a better answer.
